Rejoice, Madisonians — the spring equinox was Sun., March 20 (aka yesterday), and with that, the promise of warmer days, blossoming landscapes, and yes (takes deep sigh) pollen. Personally, we think the weather is an underrated conversation topic, so we peeked at some of the major weather trends headed our way over the next few months.

Here’s what you can expect this spring in the 608 + beyond based on predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center.

🌡️ Temperature
Think warm. Expect to see warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the United States, with the exception of the Pacific Northwest, California coast + upper Midwest, where temperatures are expected to be slightly cooler through at least April. In Madison, there’s a 40-50% chance of temps being hotter than usual. Usually, 608 averages highs of 47° in April, 58° in May, and 68° in June.

🌨️ Precipitation
Keep your umbrella nearby. There’s a 50/50 chance that rain will trend above normal through June. Usually, 608 averages 2.13 inches in April, 1.97 inches in May, and 2.14 inches in June.

⌛ Drought
The chances of a drought developing will remain unlikely through May 31.

Did you know? The equinox is often associated with rebirth, fertility, and new beginnings. It’s even celebrated as a national holiday in Japan. If you’re interested in joining the celebration, try these local events:
