Gather ‘round — in the spirit of Halloween, we have spooky insights on some of the most haunted places in the city + their mysterious inhabitants. Fort Worth was established in 1849, and it appears that some past residents never left.

Read on, if you dare.

Known as the haunted castle of Lake Worth, or The Whiting Castle, it was built in 1860 and owned by several families before it was sold to the city of Fort Worth by then-owner Oliver S. Kennedy in 1911.

The mysterious story of the ‘runaway bride’ dates back to 1860, when the owner and builder of the castle found his fiancée floating dead in the lake. It was never clear what happened to her, but people claim to see a woman in a white dress running from the property to the edge of the lake, then vanishing.

Many believe that the historic hotel is haunted by former guests who have long overstayed their welcome. Some say the television and radio set will randomly turn on, the bathroom doors creak open by themselves, and on the second floor, the ghost of a cowboy apparently lurks where a murder supposedly happened in the 1920s.

The star attraction is the Bonnie and Clyde room, where the infamous outlaws checked in during their 1933 escapades. On some occasions, guests have reported the bathroom faucet turning on and off by itself.

In the Stockyards sits this 'haunted hotel', which opened in 1910. Since that time, the building has been a boarding house, a high-end hotel for wealthy cattlemen, a brothel + the city’s first-ever official bed and breakfast. Over the decades, the building has apparently accumulated a collection of spirits, including a cowboy, a woman, and a small child.

According to the hotel’s website, the seven themed rooms all share stories of paranormal activity, and one previous guest said of their stay, “Do not expect to sleep too much as there is activity all night long.”

Still not spooked? This one is bound to get your palms sweating.

The historic building (also known as the Wharton-Scott House) was constructed in 1903 for wealthy rancher William Thomas "W. T." Waggoner’s daughter. Several Fort Worthians lived in the building until it became vacant from 1968 to 1975.

During renovations years later, there were multiple reports of paranormal activity, including:

A woman dressed in white on the landing of the grand staircase
A man dressed in tennis clothes on the grounds, sporting a handlebar mustache
Music blaring from a closed-off third-story bedroom
Voices and footsteps heard throughout the mansion

Connect with Fort Worth’s ancestors, both figuratively and spiritually. Some structures at this living history museum date back to the 1840s, but it’s the Foster Cabin that may give you a few chills. The former staff offices and gift shop have been the site of reported paranormal activity, from unexplained footsteps to missing objects and mysterious cold spots.

According to local lore, Harry Foster’s wife died in the cabin during childbirth. Harry later married the family’s nanny, Jane Holt, who also died years later. Today, Holt’s spirit is said to linger in the form of a lilac scent — a nod to the perfume she was rather fond of. So, if you catch a floral whiff while exploring, you might not be alone.

The downtown structure was constructed in the 1920s, when it served as a ticket office for the Dallas-Cleburne rail line. When that shut down in the 1930s, the downstairs became a candy factory, while the upstairs became a rumored brothel.

Over the years, a woman who appears in mirrors, strange chills, a child playing with a ball, and a cowboy dressed in black have been reported by current tenants.

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse, 812 Main St.

A 16-oz ribeye and a tall glass of red wine sound anything but scary, right? Guess again. The fine dining restaurant occupies a historic building that reportedly served as a bathhouse during Hell’s Half Acre’s heyday in the 1890s.

Legend has it that one day a gambler stumbled inside for a little self-care, but was reportedly shot while bathing. His ghost apparently still likes to linger at the upstairs bar and banquet room. Keep an eye on your wine glass — and an eye out for swinging lights. Dinner and a show, anyone?

If you want to get into the spooky spirit and check out these sites yourself, the Stockyards have ghost tours that are bound to keep you up at night.
