In case you missed it, the City of North Charleston is looking to fly a new official flag. Back in February, we let you know the city was requesting design ideas from the public.

After reviewing 160 submissions, North Charleston has selected 10 designs to run up the flagpole in order to gather feedback. These 10 designs are not the official finalists, but will be used to help the city refine its plans for a new flag.

This project is being held in honor of the city’s 50th anniversary. The goal is to fly a flag created by and for the community. Several things prompted a gearshift, including the current flag's “seal on a sheet” look.

Mayor Keith Summey spoke about the community-wide collaboration, saying that the current flag does not follow the basic principles of flag design — watch his address here for more info on the project.

The five principles of flag design:

Keep it simple
Use meaningful symbolism
Use two or three basic colors
No lettering or seals
Be distinctive or be related

All in all, the city is looking for something simple, distinctive, and symbolic of North Charleston.

These 10 ideas are all pretty great, but here in the CHS office we’re digging that bottom right flag + could totally see it waving in the breeze.
