Mayor Wu announced the City of Boston’s comprehensive Summer Safety Plan on Tuesday, May 21.

The annual plan, created by the Mayor’s Community Safety Team, supports youth development through a public health lens. After 27 community hearings, the CST focused on public safety, school programs, and youth employment opportunities.

Putting the plan into action

Community engagement and grassroots work are core initiatives throughout CST’s six goals for the summer. To ensure safer neighborhoods for families, Bostonians can expect increased violence prevention efforts. Families feeling connected and engaged at public institutions like playgrounds, parks, and block parties are key results of this plan.

Boston Public Schools will also provide resources throughout the summer for families, including:

Summer mental health and mentoring services
Healthy and nutritious meals
Internships and volunteering opportunities
Additional coursework and future planning

Employment opportunities for young people

The Summer Safety Plan also includes summer job opportunities for teens outside the classroom. Young Bostonians aged 14 to 24 can apply for summer employment programs using futureBOS. Pro Tip: There’s even an online guide to help fill out prospective applicants.
