If you’ve lived in Indy long enough, you’ve probably been to a Pacers game, seen the Colts in action, and maybe even watched Indy Eleven’s new women’s team kick off. But what about a game of Camogie?

What did you say?

Camogie, hurling and Gaelic football are all sports you can play if you join the Indianapolis Gaelic Athletic Association (Indy GAA) — a sporting + social club that promotes Irish culture through traditional Gaelic games.

“Gaelic” is a term used to describe the people + culture of Ireland. Hurling involves a stick + ball, similar to field hockey and lacrosse, and “camogie” is the women’s version. Gaelic football is similar to rugby, soccer, and American football, during which hands and feet are both used and the objective is to score points with goals or getting the ball between two upright posts above the goals.

For those who want to stick to the sidelines, the association hosts many games throughout the year, including the Indy Invitational, which brings together teams nationwide.

What should I know about the Invitational?

This year, Indy GAA will be hosting nearly 20 teams from all over the U.S. to compete.

“Over the years the Indy Invitational has gained a reputation as the premier Gaelic games tournament in the midwest, and has become a real point of pride for our club,” said Kyle Keesling, Indy GAA PR Officer.

“We also love having the chance to welcome athletes from all over the country to show off what really makes Indianapolis the amateur sports capital of America.”

Here are the details:

When: Sat., June 18, starting at 9 a.m.
Where: Indianapolis World Sports Park at 1313 S. Post Rd.

Beer from Bier Brewery (the event’s sponsor) will be available for purchase, as well as a food truck or two. An after party will also be held at Kilroy’s Bar & Grill on the corner of Meridian and Georgia streets.

Pro tip: If you’re a spectator, be sure to bring a lawn chair — there will be a tented pavilion for you to kick back + enjoy the game.

How can I get involved?

You can join Indy GAA’s Hurling or Gaelic Football leagues, which are offered throughout most of the year for adults of all ages + skill levels. It also has a growing youth program for kids as young as five years old. Already in a Gaelic club? There’s still time to sign up for the Invitational. If you’re not the athletic type, you can also volunteer at the event.
