Calling all movers and shakers. Make your voice heard by applying to serve as a volunteer member on one of Richmond’s 50+ boards and commissions.

As a member, you can weigh in on a variety of topics such as affordable housing, city planning, and urban forestry. Applications are reviewed by a City Council standing committee and City Council appoints recommended applicants.

The Office of the City Clerk posts board vacancies on the 15th of July, October, January, and April. Applications for April vacancies are now open and will be due Wed., June 15.

Who can apply? Anyone who lives and/or works in the City of Richmond. Double check the details for each board or commission to make sure there’s no additional requirements.
Can I serve on multiple boards and commissions? You can serve on up to two boards, commissions, or committees at a time. One exception: Members on the Board of Zoning Appeals should only hold that position, and no others.
Where do I find vacancies? Review the full list here. We’re seeing openings on the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks, the Clean City Commission, and the Richmond Public Library Board.

For this application term, City Council is appointing nine members to the City Charter Review Commission. Members will conduct a comprehensive review of the City Charter, engage the public + make recommendations to amend it.

Fun fact: The current City Charter dates back to 1948.

If you have experience in local government (practical or academic) or are a citizen-at-large (that’s anyone who lives in the city), you are qualified to serve on the commission.
