I went to my first concert at the Filene Center at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts — the only national park in the US that’s a dedicated concert venue. I’m not just saying this; I truly think this is one of my new favorite places.

Two of my favorite things are the outdoors and music, and this venue combines those aspects in such a beautiful way. There’s so much to explore, but I’m here to share my first-hand experience.

And for those curious, the concert in question was Gregory Alan Isakov, and he performed with the National Symphony Orchestra. As a former orchestra kid, I’ve always had a soft spot for symphonic music.

Arriving at the venue

To get to Wolf Trap, I decided to metro and take the shuttle. The journey along the Silver Line to the McLean station was seamless, and the signs directing folks to the shuttle are easy to follow.

The shuttle does cost money, so make sure you have enough funds on your SmarTrip card. Alternatively, bring a $5 bill — but keep in mind that the shuttle cannot provide change, a lesson I learned the hard way. You’ll then be given a wristband, which you show to the shuttle driver on the way back.

Concert time

I arrived an hour before the show and made my way into the venue. It was a truly breathtaking place, surrounded by trees and greenery. For a moment, it felt as though I were far removed from any major city — a feeling I must admit I quite enjoy from time to time.

The gates open 90 minutes before every concert, and because lawn seats are first come, first served, arrive early to secure a good spot. I splurged on an actual seat, which opens 30 minutes before showtime.

If you’re on the lawn, you’re welcome to bring your own food, coolers with drinks, blankets, and chairs — everything you need for a perfect summer evening picnic while enjoying amazing live music. Those in the in-house seating can bring in water bottles or drinks in the reusable Wolf Trap cups.

As the sun began to set, people settled into their seats for the concert. I could write a whole page about how beautiful the amphitheater is, but I’ll spare you the details and simply say that you should check it out for yourself. One thing I will note, though, is that because the venue is outdoors, you can hear the crickets and other bugs chirping alongside the music. Personally, I felt that the sounds of nature added to the atmosphere and made the experience even more enjoyable.

Departing the venue

After the concert, I made my way to the shuttle buses that take you back to the McLean station. As stated, I just showed my wristband and grabbed a seat. Overall, it was a really easy experience, and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn’t want to deal with driving or parking.
