San Antonio Polo history

In 1920, the newly-formed San Antonio Polo Club (now one of the nation’s oldest polo clubs) was granted permission by the City to prepare a grass polo field at no cost and featured competitions between civilian + military teams that filled the bleachers. The 1930s through the 1940s marked the sport's popularity in Brackenridge Park attracted large crowds, international fanfare, and top players. The high-level polo talent + matches at Brackenridge Park continued until the late 1980s.

Fun fact: In 1930 Cosimo Lucchese, a local bootmaker, presented the Lucchese Cup to the winner of an annual tournament held in Brackenridge Park.
