Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is taking the head coach position with the Washington Commanders, according to NFL insiders.

Quinn was reportedly offered the position after Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson pulled out of the running. Quinn will take the place of Ron Rivera, who's been with the Commanders since 2020.

Quinn has led the Cowboys' defense for 55 games over the past three seasons, helping the team win the NFC East Division title (over the Commanders) for the 2023 + 2021 season. The NFL ranked the Cowboys' defense No. 5 this season with an average of 299.7 defensive yards.

This will be the second head coach position of his career — he coached the Atlanta Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance in 2016.

Since the Cowboys ended their season in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, Quinn has been interviewing with several franchises including the Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, and LA Chargers. He was rumored to head to the Seattle Seahawks before the franchise hired Mike Macdonald on Wednesday.

The big question: Who will replace Quinn as the Cowboys' new defensive coordinator?

Last month, Cowboys Wire suggested three internal candidates: assistant secondary coach Al Harris, passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., and linebacker coach Scott McCurley.
