Fort Worth's historic Fritz G. Lanham Federal Office Building was put up for sale by the federal agency General Services Administration this week. For decades, the Fritz building has housed several more federal agencies, like the Social Security Administration, the Internal Revenue Service + the National Weather Service.

Now, the unknown future poses a question: What should take its place?

Looking back

The building was designed by the affluent FTW architect Wyatt C. Hedrick and his firm, who were known for their Art Deco designs of FTW structures, like the Will Rogers complex and T&P Warehouse. The Fritz building opened in 1966, named after Fritz Garland Lanham, a US representative who was born in Weatherford in 1880.

At 14 stories high, the building is Fort Worth's 24th tallest building with 669,264 sqft inside. The interior includes a cafeteria, snack bar, fitness facility, and health unit. Outside, it has an accompanying garage.

Looking ahead

The building is now a blank canvas. Tell us what you think the building should turn into.
