Texas is one of the top states attracting movers, according to data from U-Haul's latest Growth Index, which captures US migration trends via one-way customer moves over the last year.

This mid-year report is broken down by generations, and it shows that Austin is attracting a young crowd. Psst — looking back to last year, Texas was the number one state for net gains. Here's how each cohort is moving.

Gen Z (1997-2012)

Austin's sole top-10 placement on the national list was with Gen Z, marking the No. 6 metro area where youngsters are moving. Furthermore, Texas is the top state attracting Zoomers, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area is No. 2 on their list.

New Austin residents are most frequently coming inbound from Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

Millennials (1981-1996)

Texas is the No. 2 state of choice for Millennial movers, just behind Florida, though they're trending more toward Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Brownsville-McAllen. Of the Millennials that do choose Austin, they often come from Denver, Houston, Chicago, Tulsa, and Philadelphia.

Gen X (1965-1980)

Like Millennials, Florida and Texas are the top two states attracting Gen X folks. And this generation likes to stay in the Lone Star State — new Gen X residents of Austin most frequently come from Houston, Dallas, College Station; Lafayette, Louisiana; and Lubbock.

Boomers (1946-64)

Members of this generation are not choosing Texas, as the Lone Star State doesn't even appear in the top 10 for these folks, but rather the Carolinas. But never say never — Austin has a net gain from San Antonio, Fayetteville, Denver, Colorado Springs, and Santa Fe when it comes to Boomers.
