Park(ing) Day is Sep. 18 — it’s an annual global event where citizens, artists, and activists collaborate to transform metered parking spaces into temporary public places. Like most events this year, Park(ing) Day is going to look a little different. If you guessed it’s going virtual, you’re right — 100 points to you.

Back up — where did Park(ing) Day come from?

The project began in 2005 when San Francisco art and design studio, Rebar, converted a metered parking space into a temporary public park. Since then, it has evolved into a global movement, with organizations + individuals creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts. Chattanooga celebrated Park(ing) Day for the first time in 2008.

The mission of Park(ing) Day is to:

Bring attention to the need for more urban open space
Spark conversation about how public space is created and allocated
Improve the quality of urban human habitat

So, how are we celebrating virtually?

Event organizers Chattanooga Design Studio are asking businesses, community groups, and families to take advantage of public spaces in a safe + socially distanced manner. Interested? Here’s how you can get involved. 👇

Submit a virtual parklet. Send your photos and/or videos (5 mins max) along with a short blurb about how you are dealing with a virtual and socially distanced world. Send all videos + photos to tina@chattanoogastudio.com.
The deadline is Fri., Sep. 11 to submit a virtual parklet.
Tune in to the Park(ing) Day Facebook page on Fri., Sep. 18 to join in on the virtual fun and learn how others in the community are responsibly taking advantage of public spaces.
Share the Facebook page with your family and friends and let's all connect virtually on Park(ing) Day 2020.

We can’t wait to see what y’all come up with this year. 👀
