Question: when is the last time you stopped by your local library? If you can’t recall your last visit, then you’re seriously overdue for another.

Contrary to what some may believe, the library is much more than a stale reminder of a bygone era. Prefer your sound system or Kindle device to classic hardcovers? Audio + e-books are available for checkout at the Chattanooga Public Library. Books not your thing? Stream movies, music, comics + TV shows for free using your library card.

And there’s no need to stop at the checkout line– CPL offers all kinds of programs, classes, tools, kids activities + more. The best part? All of it is free for cardholders.
How to get a card
No card? No problem. All you have to do to become a cardholder is stop by any branch, fill out a quick form + provide current identification showing a city of Chattanooga address (i.e. a driver’s license). Or, you can just fill out this online form + have your card mailed to you.

It’s 100% free for residents, part-time residents + volunteers who donate 20 or more hours per year. Those living outside the city can still get a card for a $50 annual fee. More info on that here.

Free services…
...you may not know CPL provides with your library card:

Check out tools
Library card holders (18+) can check out up to three of the 51 tools available at the new Tool Library. Need a staple gun for that school project? How about a hacksaw to cut your own Christmas tree? Tired of whittling sticks? Amateur woodworkers can borrow a wood chisel set to complete their projects.

The Sewing Lab
One of the first things you notice on the 4th Floor is a row of sewing machines and bolts of fabric. They offer everything you might need to sew that patchwork quilt or make a custom prom dress. It’s a great place to learn how to sew without investing in your own equipment.

Public computers + WiFi
Public computers and WiFi are available at all four branches of the Chattanooga Public Library. Guests can access the computers for up to 2 hours per day if other patrons are waiting.

The Studio
A full recording studio can cost thousands of dollars to set up and it probably won’t be as professional as The Studio on the third floor. The best part? It’s open to everybody. It features 1,000 square feet of recording space with “industry-standard equipment” and a recording expert (Charles Allison) to help you record the best possible sound.

Genealogy
Researching your family history has never been easier. The library offers multiple resources for genealogical research including the Ancestry.com Library Edition (one of the largest online databases), access to an archive of Chattanooga obituaries + other online resources to help you fill out that family tree.
