Loveman’s Department Store, Burt’s Shoes, the Grand Hotel, Woolworth’s — all parts of Chattanooga’s vibrant community back in the day.

While we appreciate our lives in the 21st century (the two of us very much enjoy having the right to vote these days, thank you), there’s something special about taking in the city’s streets long before they were filled with our favorite coffee shops or renovated into something new.

Thanks to the Chattanooga Historical Society, we were able to take a trip down memory lane:

Unknown year vs. 2022 | Broad and 8th Streets looking East | Things may have changed, but the historic Dome Building remains an influential piece of architecture in Chattanooga.

Pre-1930 vs. 2022 | Corner of Georgia Avenue + Market Street | Before it was the Pickle Barrel, it was the "Hotel Plaza," and before that, this flatiron-shaped building was home to the Southern Express Co. — we gotta say, those blue streets sure liven up the space.

1989 vs. 2022 | Market Street between 11th + 12th Streets | This 1989 photo shows construction taking place on what was previously old warehouses, and eventually became the shopping center we know as Warehouse Row.

1989 vs. 2022 | 6th and Market Streets | This former EPB building was said to have some incredible Christmas lights during the holidays, just like our current downtown EPB building — located further down Market — has each year.

Unknown year vs. 2022 | 14th + Cowart Streets | Once an Armour meat packing company, later a Southside grill restaurant, and most recently, a nightclub, this building has seen it all — and it's currently for sale.

Circa 1980-1990 vs. 2022 | Walnut Street Bridge from Bluff View | The Walnut Street Bridge wasn't always the blue color we see today. Don't let the 2022 picture fool ya, there's still plenty of greenery to be seen from this vantage point — you can thank winter for the lack of it in this photo.
