When we asked what you wanted us to cover in 2020, reader Rick W. asked for ideas for senior citizen employment.

“I need some part-time work that still pays minimum wage,” he said.

And Rick isn’t alone. After we ran this article, in which Voices contributor Nicole Pierce wrote about how the local job market is solid for millennials, reader Peter R. asked us, “Are only young people getting hired?”

Hmm...good questions, y’all. Let’s see.

The big picture

○ As of February 2019, more than 20 percent of adults over the age of 65 nationwide were either working or looking for work. That’s up from 10 percent in 1985, according to the AARP. The organization also reported that more people are working after retirement.

○ Tennessee ranks 15th nationwide in population of people 65 and older and comes in at No. 14 for opportunities for senior citizens, according to Retirementjobs.com.

○ One survey found that — coming into 2020 — Chattanooga had the best hiring outlook in the country, compared to other major metropolitan areas, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported.

Try this.

Become a substitute teacher

If you love kids and want to be a part of their growth and education, you can apply to become a substitute teacher for the Hamilton County School System. This job is perfect for seniors who don’t want a full-time job but are still interested in working.

Become a Moc

Our very own UTC Mocs have various job openings that don’t involve teaching. You can become a manager of the testing center, veteran benefits specialist, part-time assistant teacher for UTC’s children center, and lots more. Plus, working at UTC can get you a few good benefits like discounts at the food court. 😉

Let us hear your ideas.

We came up with a couple of ideas, but we want to hear from you, NOOGA.

If you’re retired but still working, what are you doing and how do you like it? Do you work for an organization that could benefit from someone with decades of life experience on the team? Send us your job opportunities.
