Red Light 101

Red light therapy is a form of laser therapy using light wavelengths that stimulate mitochondria. Since mitochondria power our cells, benefits from red light can include stimulating collagen, increasing skin plumpness, softening fine lines, and reducing inflammation — basically, all the good stuff.

These benefits make red light a great choice for aging skin concerns, though one of my favorite properties of red light therapy is its ability to speed up wound healing — I get facial extractions semi-regularly, and I like red light’s healing effect on acne marks and scars.

Check out Cleaveland Clinic’s page to read more about the research on red light.

The Currentbody LED Mask

Currentbody’s Series 1 TS mask utilizes two kinds of light: red and near infra-red light.

The mask is rechargeable, and comes with everything you need to re-power the battery. It also comes with removable eye goggles for comfort (note that the eye goggles are hollow — they’re more for providing a cushion between the mask and your face than for blocking the red light), a headstrap, and a bag to organize everything.

Currentbody says that after four weeks of continuous use (read: 10 minutes of use, three to five times per week), you can expect to see results. Spoiler alert: I’ve been using it for two, and I’m already seeing the benefits.

Pros vs. Cons

Here’s a breakdown of what I love about the mask, and what might be a deal breaker for some:

Pros:

  • The red light benefits are effective, in my opinion — with just a short bit of use, I’ve seen quicker healing acne marks and an overall healthier, more even-toned appearance.
  • This mask is flexible, meaning that if you wanted to get wild and use it on a different body area, you could. Pro tip: Use it on your scalp or hairline to get red light’s hair growth benefits, or use it on your neck to get anti-aging benefits there.
  • The mask automatically shuts off after ten minutes, meaning you don’t have to set a timer — yay! Fun fact, less is more when it comes to red light therapy — benefits don’t come from longer lasting sessions, but from continuous use over time. AKA: Ten minutes is all you need.

Cons:

  • I can’t say I find this mask comfortable, particularly on my forehead or nose. This isn’t a deal breaker for me as I’m only wearing it for ten minutes at a time, but it’s worth noting.
  • The eye goggles don’t add anything for me, and didn’t increase the mask’s comfort.
  • Many customers have reported the mask stops working over time — I haven’t been using it long enough to tell, but if you’re serious about red light therapy, you may want to invest in something a little bit more expensive upfront with a warranty or long life.
