“A bustling alpine village set against a scenic backdrop of mountains, forests, and river banks…” No, we’re not headed to Germany — we’re hitting the road to Helen, GA (~2 hrs from Greenville).

We shared 15 local spots to celebrate Oktoberfest here in Greenville, but if you’re looking to level up your “prosts” this fall, head to the longest-running Oktoberfest in the US.

What to do

Oktoberfest-ing | Now through Nov. 1, take a short walk from Downtown Helen to the Festhalle and enjoy music from Oktoberfest bands, authentic German brats and other food, and — of course — beer.

Hiking | Hit the trails to one of the area’s waterfalls, or find another picturesque spot to watch the leaves change later in the fall season.

Shopping | Whether you need the perfect Bavarian hat, hat pins, or candy from a shop called — you guessed it — Hansel and Gretel’s, a stroll around Downtown Helen's shops is a must-do.

My go-to is the "Jägerschnitzel mit Spätzle und Kartoffelsalat." | Photo by The Heidelberg

Where to eat

The Heidelberg | This three-floor German restaurant, pub, and music hall is located in the back left corner of Helen's Main Street square.

Mueller’s Fried Cheese Cafe | To be honest, you had me at "fried cheese."

Village Crepe Haus | This is the spot for breakfast and mimosas before you head to the fest.
