Rising above the heart of downtown Columbia, the South Carolina State House is one of the state’s most recognizable landmarks, where history, architecture and government converge. More than just the seat of state government, it’s a destination filled with stories spanning centuries, offering visitors a deeper understanding of South Carolina’s past and present.

The result of more than 50 years of construction, beginning in 1855 and concluding in 1907, the State House was built primarily from blue granite, South Carolina’s official state stone. The building was designed to be completely fireproof, allowing it to safely house important state records while serving as the home to two of South Carolina’s three branches of government: the Legislative and Executive Branches.

Visitors will see reminders of pivotal moments in South Carolina history throughout the building and grounds. Bronze markers indicate where Confederate cannon fire struck the building during the Civil War. Monuments honoring influential people and events spanning centuries of South Carolina history dot the surrounding gardens and oak-shaded grounds, creating a sense in which the past feels present even on peaceful afternoons.

Inside, intricate details, historic chambers and grand architectural features showcase the craftsmanship behind one of South Carolina’s most treasured public buildings.

While lawmakers continue to work within its walls today, the State House remains open and accessible to visitors year-round. Free guided tours are offered Monday through Saturday and provide visitors with a closer look at the chambers, artwork, monuments and stories that have shaped South Carolina for generations.

For those who prefer to explore independently, self-guided brochures are available, allowing visitors to move through the Capitol at their own pace. Families, history enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike will find plenty to discover throughout the experience.

Commemorate your trip to the capital with a stop at the State House Gift Shop, where you’ll find an assortment of items from apparel and home décor to books and jewelry adorned with the palmetto and crescent logo, or the official state seal. The State House Gift Shop is also the only provider of South Carolina’s official dinnerware, made by Vietri.

A visit to the State House is also an opportunity to experience Columbia itself. South Carolina’s capital city offers a unique blend of Southern history, college-town energy, outdoor recreation and a growing culinary scene. After touring the Capitol, visitors can continue exploring downtown restaurants, museums, art districts and nearby riverfront parks.

More than a historic landmark, the South Carolina State House remains a place where the state's story continues to unfold. With engaging exhibits, fascinating stories and free admission, the South Carolina State House offers an enriching experience for visitors of all ages where curiosity is rewarded, and learning comes to life.
