And there’s plenty of new business still on the way:

Poe West Hardware & Supply Co. has been historic property at 556 Perry Ave. (in the Village of West GVL), but it’s about to get a huge upgrade. The building will be on its way to becoming Poe West when The Furman Co. breaks ground this fall. Poe West will be a collaborative business complex including office space for creatives, a brewery and restaurant space, and retail, all anchored by an educational tenant. The Furman Co. most recently developed Keys Court on McBee Ave. (you’ve probably been there to check out Yee-Haw Brewing Co. or hit a CycleBar class).

The lowdown on the development:

💸 Cost: ~$9.5 million

⏰ Estimated completion date: Summer 2019

🏢 Size: 56,000 square feet, 5.58 acres (with plenty of parking + community green space)

👥 Tenants: The property is 50% leased already, with tenant announcements within the next 60 days

📜 History: Poe Hardware & Supply Co. was founded in 1876, moved from S Main St. to Perry Ave. in 1964, and remained there until 1992

New business in the Village has also prompted the city to make public improvements + new zoning regulations, like extending the plaza outside the Anchorage (and adding a new sculpture) + turning Branwood Ave into a one-way, making the area more walkable. New zoning regulations could limit building heights and lessen parking requirements. Read more here.

Back when I started as an intern at GVLtoday, I had never been to the Village. I remember walking down Pendleton on my lunch break + looking at all the vacant buildings, thinking it would be such a perfect mini-downtown if the shops could somehow find new life.

Less than a year later, the street is bustling with new people and a new feeling of community. I couldn’t be happier for our GVLtoday team to call the Village home.
