Have you ever stuck something out for 1,500 days? (Yeah, if you’re doing the math, that’s roughly four years.)

If you answered “yes,” then you’re in the best of company with Joe Hindman + David Stone – Greenville natives and co-owners of Modal: a modern hostel. The pair recently finished the renovation of a former dentist office at 813 Augusta St. turning it into only the second hostel in the state of South Carolina and the first in Greenville (and definitely the nicest hostel we’ve ever seen). A project that Hindman refers to as his “version of a master’s program.”

The initiative started as a crowd-funding campaign back in 2016 and has come together as a unique lodging option for the Greenville community complete with three dormitory style shared rooms + two private suites accommodating up to 23 people.

The overall black + white aesthetic is dotted with pops of color and inspiration in the form of art from local, regional, and national creatives (including the current exhibit by local artist Kym Day in the Āto Social Club gallery space). There’s also plenty of authentic mid-century modern furniture Hindman picked up from antique + vintage shops in the area and plant life from savereign.

Perhaps the most impressive feature, however, is the expansive tree-house-like second story almost unascertainable from the curb. Oh, and did we mention, the staircase to the second floor “is an expression of our (Modal’s) commitment to the acceptance and promotion of diversity in the community and a visual representation of variety through a Pantone® inspired skin color gradient” as seen in the image below.

This boutique hostel promises to be an “unprecedented hospitality experience” for both Greenville natives and travelers alike. Modal is aiming to open the property for booking within the next two weeks after training their staff and finalizing operational systems.
