Earlier this month, lawmakers of the state’s house of representatives backed a bill that would raise South Carolina’s gas tax 10 cents, to almost 27 cents per gallon (on top of the federal gas tax, 18.4 cents) to help fund road fixes. After a Senate finance subcommittee recently took up that House bill and beefed it up, it would increase the gas tax by 12 cents per gallon, which would be phased in over six years.

Yesterday, Freedom Action Network of South Carolina (FANofSC), a group in opposition of the bill, paid the gas tax of visitors to the Eagles gas station on Pelham, reducing the cost per gallon to $1.58.

According to a recent poll by the Trafalgar Group, a raise in gas taxes to fix state roads was strongly opposed by South Carolinians. What are your thoughts?
