Whether you’re trying to stick to a budget or not quite ready to fly, road trips are a safe + cost-effective way to satisfy that travel itch.

Here are 9 ways to plan an affordable road trip this summer:

Plan your destination

Before you pack your bags and hit the road, you’ll want to know where you’re going + how you’re going to get there. Creating a plan will save you time, money, and frustration.

Create a budget

As you create your traveling budget, factor in expenses like gas, lodging, food, activities, and unexpected expenses. Next, you can open a savings account + automate your deposits to stay on track.

Find inexpensive places to stay

You may want to consider breaking up a long drive. You can search websites and travel apps to find the best deals on hotels, or consider AirBnbs. Have friends or family along your route? Consider asking them to let you stay for a night.

Service your vehicle

Think: tires, brake pads, fluids, lights, and an oil change. #ProTip: If your car is unreliable, you may want to consider renting or purchasing a new one.

Pack the essentials

You’ll want to make sure to pack everything you may need. Also, be sure to pack some cash + exact change in case your route includes tolls or you stop somewhere that only accepts cash.

BYO snacks

Pack a cooler to satisfy your cravings. Also, pack a refillable water bottle to cut down on the cost of buying beverages.

Make it fun

“Are we there yet?” Avoid that dreaded question by downloading playlists, books, or podcasts the entire family will enjoy. You can also add excitement along your route with walking/hiking tours, museums, parks, and beaches.

Use your credit card

Does your credit card offer a rewards program? If so, you can use it for expenses like gas, hotels, and restaurants to earn cashback rewards.

Save money while you’re away

You can set the thermostat to a higher temperature, turn off the water, and unplug unused appliances + devices like the coffee maker, TV, and computer.
