Leisurehound Athletic Club is giving downtown dog owners a new place to let their pups off-leash while they kick back with a drink.

The new dog park and biergarten located between North Main Street and River Drive soft opens Friday, Sept. 18. Hours are 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Owners Jordan and Adam Bergeson got the idea after visiting similar spots in Atlanta, before moving to Columbia with their dogs, Billie and Bingo.

“You can take your dog to a brewery, but they’re on a leash wrapped up around your legs,” Adam said.

Here, the dogs get their own happy hour. Humans get in free, and no pup is required. Dogs need vaccination records and either a day pass or membership before heading into the fenced, half-acre play area. Inside the fence, there’s plenty of room to run, plus a small pool aptly named “Lake Furray.”

While the dogs make friends, their humans can grab beer, wine, coffee, or other drinks and catch the game on TV. They also plan to bring in food trucks and live music on occasion.

“It’ll be nice to be able to sit down and give your dog an hour to play while you have a beer and watch a game,” Jordan said.

The Bergesons hope Leisurehound becomes more than a dog park, creating a neighborhood gathering spot near Earlewood and the bustling BullStreet area.
