Barron’s Outfitters is settling into its new home on Millwood Avenue, but the longtime Columbia outdoor store brought nearly 80 years of history along with it.

The outdoor outfitter opened on Millwood Avenue last month, leaving the Harden Street address it had called home since Charlie Barron founded the business in 1947. Current owner Kent Parsons and his late father, Dr. George Parsons, became involved with the business 28 years ago, continuing a legacy established by founder Charlie Barron and later owner David Kinder.

Its new digs also have a longtime Columbia connection.

The 5,629-sqft building was previously home to DeLoache Flowers for more than 70 years, with one longtime local business giving way to another.

Barron’s had been searching for a larger, more modern space for several years, hoping to stay close to its longtime Harden Street location. The new showroom has more room for the hunting and fishing gear Barron’s is known for, along with outdoor apparel, footwear, hats, T-shirts, and brands like Filson, Danner Boots, and Marsh Wear.

For local anglers, it’s also a go-to spot for gearing up before hitting Lake Murray or fishing Columbia’s three rivers.

After nearly 80 years on Harden Street, Barron’s has a new address, but it’s still outfitting Columbia for the outdoors.
