Today we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and although its popularity in the US may have eclipsed its significance in Mexico, it still represents an opportunity to reflect locally on Portland and Oregon’s Mexican and Latinx heritage.

The date honors Mexico’s victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The Second Franco-Mexican War didn’t end that day, but the battle became a symbol of resistance against foreign powers.

If you’re looking to observe the holiday, we’ve rounded up five local spots to eat and drink in Portland.

Tope | 4-10:30 p.m. | 15 NW 4th Ave.

This rooftop taqueria offers sweeping Mount Hood views from atop The Hoxton hotel, which get even better with a Double Barrel Cadillac Margarita in hand. Pro tip: The calabasas fritas tacos are a tasty vegan delight, with fried summer squash, vegan sour cream, cashew salsa, watermelon + radish.

Xico | 5-9 p.m. | 3715 SE Division St.

Here, Oaxaca-inspired fare is made with locally sourced ingredients and served in a modern Mexican setting. The La Miela cocktail incorporates Wahaka Mezcal Espadín, honey syrup, fresh lime juice, and gusano salt around the rim, pairing perfectly with the queso fundido + tamales.

Verde Cocina | 11 a.m.-9 p.m. | Multiple locations

Chef/owner Noé Garnica hails from Guanajuato, Mexico, and his roots in sustainable farming are evident in every aspect of this family-run business. Puro, Mayan Mule, and other exclusive cocktails will be available through the weekend.
