Never forget. This Friday marks 25 years since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Honor the victims, survivors, affected, and heroes at these two Winston-Salem events.

Climb to Remember

2,977. That’s how many heroes lost their lives on September 11. You can honor them this Friday morning by climbing one stair for each victim at Allegacy Stadium during Wake Forest University’s Climb to Remember.

This annual event brings together community members, first responders, members of Wake Forest’s No Fear Army ROTC Battalion, and students from Wake Forest, WSSU, and Salem College.

Those who complete all 2,977 steps will have climbed more than 200 standard flights of stairs, nearly the amount held in both of the Twin Towers. Collectively, the World Trade Center had 220 flights of stairs.

The event starts at 6 a.m. with a ceremony to swear in several No Fear Battalion cadets into the US Army. Climbing begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 8 a.m.

Participation is free, but registration and a waiver are required.

National Day of Service and Remembrance

Participate in the National Day of Service and Remembrance with HandsOn Northwest North Carolina.

On Friday, HandsOn is hosting a disaster preparedness kit making event at the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. Volunteers will assemble kits containing essential items such as solar phone chargers, first aid kits, whistles, and dust masks. The event is supported by a grant from 9/11 Day, an organization that works to transform the day into a day of doing good.

HandsOn expects more than 200 community members of all ages to help assemble 200 total kits to be donated to the American Red Cross. Attendees will also be invited to discuss and reflect on the 25th anniversary of September 11.

Two volunteer shifts are being offered: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. or 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Registration is required.
