How do you represent 150 years of history in one mural?

Start with a large, blank canvas. That’s what Reynolds American did for the mural they commissioned in early 2025 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

The Reynolds Boulevard Mural by the numbers:

33,000 sqft of wall area
55,000 sqft of paint coverage, as the wall is corrugated
2 football fields in length
400 gallons of paint
9,000+ spray paint cans
2,000 hours of work

It is believed to be the largest mural on the East Coast by wall area. Here’s how the mural went from a piece of paper to the side of a building.

Telling the story of Reynolds American and its influence on Winston-Salem, the public art piece was painted by local artists Leo Rucker and Joey Allen. It was officially unveiled yesterday, Sept. 8., representing another milestone in the revitalization of the Reynolds Boulevard corridor.

“While this mural celebrates Reynolds and our community, I think its greatest value is that it reminds us of the stories still being written around us. It stands as a reminder that progress is built on a strong foundation, that innovation never stands still, and that companies connect to the communities they call home,” said Tim Nestor, Reynolds’ EVP of Scientific Research and Development.
