As John B. said to open the TV show's pilot episode: "The Outer Banks — paradise on Earth." We're not sending you on a mystery quest, just giving you another spot in the Tar Heel State worth the trip. Here's a few ideas to enjoy your time on Hatteras Island, only four hours drive from Raleigh:

What to see

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse | Usually, you can climb the famed diagonal-designed structure, but it's closed for restoration in 2026. It still looks good from the ground.

Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum | There are thousands of shipwrecks off the coast of the OBX. This free-admission museum explores that history.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore | There are over 70 miles of beach along the shore. Self-explanatory.

Buxton Village Books | Find a treasure to bring home from this quaint small business, with beachy reads, trinkets, journals, and other goodies you can bring home to gaze at until you return.

Where to eat

Buxton Munch | Since 1999, this laid-back spot has been the perfect place to grab a quick and easy bite. Whether you're ordering fish tacos, a crab sandwich, or other ocean-dwelling fare, you can sit in or head to the beach with your bite.

Cafe Pamlico | Once you've scrubbed up and washed the sand out of your hair, head into town for a nice meal at sunset. With west-facing views over Pamlico Sound, the catch of the day is always a good bet.

Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe | Previously a motel, Orange Blossom has been slinging tasty treats to the sweet-toothed on Hatteras Island for half a century. Don't skip the OBX-famous apple uglies — giant, lumpy apple fritters renowned in the region.

Happy Belly Ice Cream | A trip to the beach is incomplete without a sweet treat. Keep it simple with classic flavors, or browse the inventive sundae menu to indulge.

Where to stay

The Atlantic Inn Bed & Breakfast | The island's oldest hotel has operated since 1928, coming up on a century of hosting smiling beachgoers. Breakfast is included and the communal fire pit is not to be missed.

Dog-friendly Beachfront Airbnb | Gather a dozen two-legged friends and some four-legged companions to enjoy a vacation right on the shore. It couldn't be more idyllic.

National Park Service Campgrounds | There are two grounds on Hatteras Island — one in Buxton, and one in Frisco. Both are open spring to fall, both have showers, and both are close enough to the ocean to arise and drift off to the sounds of gently lapping waves.
