May is National Bike Month and Raleigh is ready to celebrate with free events + resources for cyclists, whether you’re an experienced cyclist or just starting out.

It’s no surprise that the City of Raleigh website is chock-full of events for National Bike Month, or that local nonprofit Oaks & Spokes has 20+ events in May, ranging from a Meet and Greet for the nation's first HBCU cycling team to a Mother's Day Picnic Ride.

But what you may be surprised to learn is how many year-round resources Raleigh has for cyclists. A few months ago, we told you all about the GoPerks program for tracking non-commutes, but did you know the GoPerks program extends to riding your bike, taking the bus, roller skating + more?

During the month of May, you can earn double the points for bike trips you log. Create your free account here in less than 5 minutes – you’ll earn 4 points just for registering. You can use your points to win gift certificates to local businesses.

Okay, so you’re all signed up for GoPerks, but you’re not sure where to ride your bike. The city has you covered there too. Check out the BikeRaleigh app for Android or iPhone. These maps show bike lanes, sharrows, greenways, GoRaleigh routes, and preferred routes based on bicyclist feedback + street conditions. There is also a list of trails to choose from here.

You can also check out BikeRaleigh’s Ten-Year Priority Plan + Long-Term Bike Way Plan online maps or plan where you’ll park your bicycle. The City of Raleigh has even created a video to show how to easily secure a bicycle to the front rack of a GoRaleigh bus.
