Last night, the city council held a special meeting to select a new member to represent District D — which is bordered by I-40 to the southwest and Wade Avenue to the north, encompassing neighborhoods around Centennial Campus, Western Avenue, Meredith College, Hillsborough Street, University Park, and Cameron Village.

The seat was vacated in late June, when Saige Martin, 29, resigned due to sexual assault allegations. More than 50 candidates applied to fill the role, and the field was narrowed to five finalists over the weekend: Carmen Cauthen, Stormie Forte, Jane Harrison, Todd Kennedy + Jenn Truman. Stormie is the first Black woman to serve on Raleigh’s city council + will hold the position for the remaining ~18 months of the seat’s term, until the next regular city council election is held in November 2021.
