This is not a drill: Google is coming to the Triangle. Yesterday, the tech giant unveiled plans to launch an engineering hub in Durham (and grow it into one of Google Cloud’s top five engineering hubs in the country).

While this isn’t Google’s first appearance in the area — the company has an office in Chapel Hill and hosted a summit for Black-led startups in Durham last year — it may be the most impactful. The Durham hub could bring more than 1,000 jobs to the Triangle, as part of Google’s new initiative to create at least 10,000 new jobs across the US. The company also plans to support workforce development programs + advance STEM education.

The new hub will focus on Cloud computing, aka: data storage and computer power. While Google plans to initially sublease space in the former Duke Clinical Research Institute building located at 200 Morris St., they are considering several spaces for a permanent location. No opening date has been announced yet, but Google expects to hire Durham’s first employee within the next two months.
