A trip to Washington, DC is no longer necessary to glimpse at America's most important written documents. Instead, take a short drive to Monroe to reflect on the nation's core values of "liberty and justice for all."

In a formal ceremony at Main Street Plaza, the City of Monroe, Union County, and Foundation Forward, Inc. unveiled the "Charters of Freedom" — etched bronze replicas of our country's founding documents including:

Declaration of Independence
US Constitution
Bill of Rights
Civil Rights Amendments 13, 14, 15, 19, and 24

"These documents foster understanding of our nation's principles and rights we all share," said Vance Patterson, co-founder of the Charters of Freedom. "They serve to promote communication among citizens as well as being educational and historic."

The installation in Union County is the 58th in the country and 35th in North Carolina.

"It's an opportunity to increase tourism and travel to Monroe and Union County," said Patterson. "This can be a bonding experience for families and neighbors. The impact on our community will help us as a county and city to embrace the idea of a more perfect union and to encourage unity in our city and county."
