The 2026 primary election in Buncombe County is fast approaching, and on Tuesday, March 3, it will be time again to go to the polls. US Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, District 11, Asheville City Council, and more will be on the ballot — so here are a few things to know before you vote.

Important dates

Mark your calendar so you don't miss a deadline.

Voter registration deadline | Friday, Feb. 6, 5 p.m.
Early voting | Thursday, Feb. 12-Saturday, Feb. 28
Absentee ballot request deadline | Tuesday, Feb. 17, 5 p.m.
Election Day | Tuesday, March 3, 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

Prepare for the polls

If the voter registration deadline passed you by, you can still register and vote with same-day registration during early voting (you'll just need a valid ID and proof of residency).

Pro tip: NC's Voter Search Tool is a quick way to check your voter status, find your polling location, and peruse your sample ballot. Your ballot will vary based on your residence.

Cast your vote

If you're planning to vote early, you can cast a ballot at any of the county's 11 early voting locations. Check out the schedule + locations. Pro tip: When early voting opens, the County will provide a wait map, which shows how long wait times are at each location.

On Election Day, the polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and as long as you're in line by 7:30, you'll get to cast a vote. Unlike early voting, you will have to vote at your assigned polling location. Curbside voting will be available for anyone unable to go inside.

Don't forget: You'll need a valid photo ID to vote. You can get one for free at Buncombe County Election Services (35 Woodfin St.) or the DMV.
