A vibrant new mural titled "Black Boy Joy" now overlooks Depot Street as the latest addition to the Asheville Black Cultural Heritage Trail.

The installation by artist Tommy Lee McGee (aka Sir Tom Foolery) highlights Black joy and imagination, centering a narrative the artist says is often missing from public art. The mural, made of painted panels mounted on the Glen Rock Apartments building, is the second of three public art pieces planned for the trail’s expansion.

"Black Boy Joy" joins last year’s "Black Girl Magic" mural, which is painted on the side of The Whale's South Slope taproom. The final mural is planned for South Market Street this winter.

The Asheville Black Cultural Heritage Trail opened in December 2023 to celebrate and preserve the history of Black Asheville and the people who built communities and created social change in our city. Here's how to follow the trail.
