The Kansas City Current has officially broken ground on the world’s first stadium built for a women’s professional team. Mic drop.

Just 10 months into the club's existence, KC Current co-owners Angie Long, Chris Long, and Brittany Mahomes made one of the biggest announcements in the history of the sport — a privately-funded soccer stadium at Berkley Riverfront Park.

"We are an organization that believes in investing in the community, and are so excited and proud to be celebrating this event with 300 of our closest friends, and thousands of our biggest fans," says co-owner Angie Long.

About the stadium

The stadium is being built on a 7.08-acre site on the east end of the park as a part of a 50-year lease agreement with Port KC. The primary design and construction partners include Generator Studio, JE Dunn, and Monarch Build.

"I am committed to no more just fancy renderings that never happen. When we say let's build something, we're going to build it and do it the right way for all," says Port KC CEO Jon Stephens.

The new stadium will seat 11,500 fans, equipped with local food + beverage options, and a premium bar space for Club Seating members and ticket holders.

Ground = broken

To commemorate the momentous occasion, the groundbreaking included opening remarks, food trucks, player appearances + music, followed by a firework show. Some of your favorite Kansas Citians were at the site today including Mayor Quinton Lucas and City Editor Travis.

"People will look back on October 6th, 2022, as a watershed moment. Not only for Kansas City and our riverfront, but for women's sports and global football," says co-owner Chris Long.
