UMKC is hitting a high note with plans for a major expansion to its renowned Conservatory — announced with flair at the recent "Crescendo in Concert" performance at the Kauffman Center.

This sleek, 35,000-sqft addition to the Olson Performing Arts Center will put student talent center stage, elevate community programming, and amplify enrollment by as much as 40%.

Tuning into the details

Here’s a peek at the new glassy, light-filled rehearsal and performance spaces that will soon stretch toward Volker Boulevard:

Modern black box theater
Spacious ensemble performance hall
Two dance rehearsal studios

But the Conservatory’s expansion isn't just about sleek design—it’s a strategic step to elevate UMKC’s reputation, particularly in dance and theater. It’ll also support a new minor in integrated performing arts, inviting students from across disciplines to join the act.

Why it matters for you

You don’t have to be a student to benefit. Kansas Citians will enjoy expanded access to performances, plus stronger community connections through school outreach programs, public masterclasses, and professional training for local arts educators. The popular Conservatory Bridges program — currently serving 80 talented K-12 students — will dramatically expand, growing to accommodate 500.

With significant backing from the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Family Foundation, UMKC is already halfway to its $35 million fundraising goal for phase one, setting the stage for a vibrant future in KC’s cultural spotlight.
