Big changes are underway at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF).

Through SDF Next, a multi-year capital improvement effort representing more than $1 billion in investment, the airport is transforming the Jerry E. Abramson Terminal and its airfield to create a more modern, best-in-class experience for travelers.

With several major projects in progress, here’s what passengers can expect.

A bigger, better security checkpoint

One of the most significant projects is the new Security Checkpoint Expansion: a $45 million design that will add 30,000 sqft and up to 10 screening lanes.

Scheduled to be completed in early 2027, the new checkpoint will increase SDF’s screening capacity by 60% and feature state-of-the-art equipment and a new exit lane.

Freshened-up gate areas

Several gates across Concourses A and B are getting a refresh, with updated seating areas, improved lighting, new airline podiums, and additional charging stations.

Gates A1, A3, A4, A6, B2, B4, and B5 have been completed, while Gates B6, B7, and A8 are undergoing renovations.

Travelers will also find renovated men's and women's restrooms throughout the terminal, plus a new pet relief area, opening in October.

Beyond the terminal

Taxiways B and D are adding new pavement, lighting, and enhanced drainage, while also bringing the taxiways up to current FAA standards. Both projects are scheduled for completion this fall.

Behind the scenes, SDF is also investing in resiliency. The $32 million MicroGrid project will provide on-demand grid independence, helping keep the terminal operational in the event of a power failure. This initiative will also reduce emissions and utility costs.

And looking further ahead, SDF is designing a new Federal Inspection Services facility that would allow SDF to offer international passenger flights, including support space for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
