Following a four-year hiatus, PRHBTN is staging a colorful comeback for Lexington mural season Friday, Oct. 9-Wednesday, Oct. 21.

During that time a wide-ranging exhibit at the Lexington Art League will showcase artworks for sale and six new murals will be created around town by a mix of artists from as far away as Scotland and as near as right here at home.

What does the name mean?

The nonprofit organization PRHBTN — prohibition sans vowels — celebrates art forms "that have been criminalized, marginalized, and under-appreciated in the mainstream."

Since it was founded by husband and wife John and Jessica Winters 15 years ago, the organization has produced more than 40 murals and helped local and regional Kentucky artists sell thousands of pieces of art. Two new organizers — artists Geoff Murphy and Alexandrea Pangburn — joined this year and made the return possible.

Mural season has always been crowdfunded and made possible by community support. These walls can and do talk about what's possible in Lexington.
