Lexington is still honoring Dolly Parton in ways small and large — and, as she wanted, by raising funds for the Imagination Library. This week has two big, bejeweled events to remember the country legend.

🐦‍⬛ "Readin', Rhinestones, and Dolly"
Join the Magpie Collective at 7 p.m. tonight at Doodle's for an event described as "part book club, part craft night, part birthday party," which aims to raise enough funding to support 30 Kentucky kids for an entire year of Imagination Library mailings. You can pick up $35 tickets in advance. Learn more about the Collective and its book clubs.

🪕 Dolly Day 9-25
Lexington lit up downtown landmarks in Dolly's honor, but that's not all. Moondance Amphitheater will host "an evening of music, sparkle, and heart" this Friday, Sept. 25 — cue "9 to 5" — with doors at 6 p.m. and a dazzling musical lineup starting at 7.

"Dolly Parton was an important figure for me and all the other little girls in Appalachia who dreamed of making music our career," said Carla Gover, one of the featured musicians. "She showed us that you can be true to your roots and be successful, and even as a young girl I always knew her writing was a cut above most everyone else's." Gover will be singing a duet with her daughter.

Come dressed as the Queen for the look-alike contest. Donations will be accepted for the Imagination Library.

🦋 A butterfly shirt + a big donation

A mural at The Kentucky Shop on West High Street just outside downtown quickly became an impromptu home for tributes, following news of Dolly's death. In a video, co-owner Rick Paynter explained that the shop's mural was directly inspired by the impact of the Imagination Library — which mails a free book to children birth to age 5 to inspire the love of reading — on the owners' oldest daughter, now an avid reader.

A T-shirt he designed with butterflies in the shape of Kentucky, with 50 percent of proceeds going to the Imagination Library in Fayette County, has raised more than $35,000 so far. It's still available for a limited time in adult and kids' sizes.
