Roller Derby of Central Kentucky — or fittingly ROCK — has its first home bout of the season on Saturday, June 20 from 5-8 p.m. at the Central Bank Center.

All the home bouts are double headers with ROCK's two teams, the Rock Stars and the Indie Rockers, who will face The World and Somer City Roller Derby at this one. Tickets run $15 per night or $45 for a season pass with admission to all home games.

The entire upcoming home slate includes:

"Don't be afraid to come if you haven't been," said Hannah Spahn, who is entering her third season with the team and uses the derby name Hurricane. "It's family friendly. And you don't have to know what's going on to have fun."

If you're looking for an activity a kid might enjoy attending with you, add roller derby to the list.

The group has been, well, rocking and socking on skates for 20 years. In all, there are 40 to 50 people participating each season, said Spahn.

That doesn't just mean skating. There are also referees and time keepers, among other less physically aggressive roles necessary to keeping the action going. The team has a process called "Home Room" to teach those who want to learn to skate to do so.

ROCK relies on a combination of dues, ticket sales and sponsors to rent its practice and game spaces. It also supports a different charity at each month's game. The June bout will benefit the Lexington Pride Center for Pride Month.

Editor's note: The vibe is one of supportive community, inclusion + fun. So head out and be ready to cheer while the hits keep on coming.
