Railbird isn't the only festival game in town. If you're into live theater and air-conditioned comfort, the first-ever "Voices HEaRD: A Women's Theatre Festival" runs from Wednesday, June 3 to Saturday, June 13.

The event was put together by Voices Amplified, an arts organization that focuses on using theater to promote inclusivity and lift underrepresented voices. Modeled after established festivals in North Carolina and Washington, D.C., the hope is that this year is the first of many.

"We feel and hope that Lexington can support this and make it an annual event," said Vanessa Becker Weig, executive artistic director of Voices Amplified. "Women are — through these plays — reclaiming their stories."

Open auditions were held for all the performances, which will feature local talent.

Among the festival's primary events, to be held at the Downtown Arts Center:

"Disenchanted!" | Wednesday, June 3 through Sunday, June 7 | Various times | A PG-13, hit off-Broadway show that lets princesses voice their own "happy ever afters."
"TICKTOCK Play Festival" | Saturday, June 6, Sunday, June 7, and Wednesday, June 10 | Various times | Featuring seven short plays, all new work, ranging from 5 to 30 minutes.
"Borden: A Workshop Presentation" | Thursday, June 11 through Saturday, June 13 | Various times | A new musical in development that focuses on Lizzie Borden's sister Emma. Cara Robertson, author of "The Trial of Lizzie Borden," will participate in a talkback after the Friday, June 12, session at 7:30 p.m.

There will also be workshops in acting, improv, and other skills. Full details and event tickets can be found at the Voices Amplified website.
