College courses aren’t all lectures and lab reports — especially in Indianapolis. With the fall semester around the corner, we’ve rounded up classes that go beyond the basics and might make you want to dust off your backpack.

American Supernatural (IU Indianapolis) | From the Salem Witch Trials to The Amityville Horror to the television series "Lost," explore the limitless American appetite for myths and legends that deal with the fantastic, otherworldly, or otherwise unbelievable.

Beyond the Wand: Magic, Muggles, and Me (Butler University) | Get your floo powder ready — you're about to enter the magical world of Harry Potter to analyze how the books and films intertwine complex social issues and entertainment.

Communiversity: "Dracula" (UIndy) | Students and community members are all invited to join this slow reading of Bram Stoker's world-changing classic. The fee for non-students is only $10, and it's an online book club style, with no grades, tests, or pressure.

Beers of the World (IU Indianapolis) | Sorry, freshmen — this 21+ class takes students on a tasty journey across the globe's most beloved beers, including field trips to local breweries. If wine's more your speed, there's a course for that too.

Brain Candy (Butler University) | This one's for the TikTok fans — this course eschews a traditional focus as it flits between dozens of different topics, from indie movies to graffiti art to 9-to-5 work culture and beyond.

Search for Life in the Universe (IU Indianapolis) | This course will take you to galaxies you never knew existed in its search for other technological civilizations.

Fencing (IU Indianapolis) | Don your Inigo Montoya costume and learn the basics of the ancient sport.

Film Noir (IU Indianapolis) | From femme fatales to shadowy crime underworlds, explore what defines the genre and how it has evolved.
