Indy is home to many reportedly haunted buildings and locations, from The Hannah House to The Slippery Noodle Inn, but have you heard the legend of Heady Hollow? Here's the lore behind the haunted area — which may have never even existed.

Our story begins with James + Dorothy Heady and their family, who settled and owned 1,000+ acres of land in Fishers in the early 1800s. They established the Heady Lane cemetery in what's currently the Sunblest neighborhood off Allisonville Road. It still exists and has ~30 gravestones in it, including the oldest known grave in Hamilton County dating back to 1812.

But the cemetery is all sunshine and rainbows compared to what else lies in Heady Hollow. As legend has it, Delaware Township School #2 was located in the area — and on one tragic school day, a fire burned down the school with many of the children still inside. Visitors claim they've seen the children's ghosts or heard phantom cries while passing by.

But what if the school itself is a myth? The Hamilton County Historical Society says the school, which would have been located at the intersection of Allisonville and 126th Street, never existed. But a Delaware Township map from 1866 has a "School No. 2" marked in that exact spot.

Various other claims have sought to explain the area's unsettling vibe. One legend holds that the ghostly victims of innocent travelers who were ambushed by robbers still wander the road, while another says that a grave-robber who accidentally dug up his own son's body now haunts the cemetery.

Whether any of these stories are true or not, we may never know. But what's stopping you from visiting Heady Hollow on a foggy night to find out for yourself?

Happy hauntings, Indy.
