What is it measuring?
The report considers these 5 Indicators of Competitive Communities:
Talent | Is Cola attracting + retaining a smart, skilled workforce?
Entrepreneurial + Business Environment | Is it easy to do business here? Are startups supported + fostered?
Innovative Capacity | How does Cola support and develop new technology + products?
Industry Clusters | What industries bring in jobs?
Livability | Is Cola a dynamic live, learn, work + play environment?
Who are we being compared to?
9 Southeastern cities with a similar MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) to ours – meaning they have comparable populations + economic landscapes as well as factors like major universities + similar technological strengths to ours. So places like Knoxville, Tallahassee, Winston-Salem + Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin. According to the report – the “aspirational MSA” we strive to be like is Raleigh, N.C.(Oh hey, RALtoday.)

#3. Columbia’s ranking out of 10 similarly-sized Southeastern cities in the category of Entrepreneurial & Business Environment, revealed Monday in the newest Midlands Regional Competitiveness Report. Read: Columbia is a great place to start a new biz.
Mayor Benjamin will deliver his tenth State of the City address at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center this Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. The event is free + open to the public.
7. The factors that make up the Livability indicator in the Midlands Regional Competitiveness Report – the measure of just how inclusive + dynamic a city’s work/live/learn/play offerings are – including Arts and Entertainment, Healthcare Access, Cost of Living + more. Columbia ranked #7 out of 10 similar cities in Livability.
This year, Cola ranked #3 out of 10 similarly-sized Southeastern cities in the category of Entrepreneurial & Business Environment. This means Columbia is a great city in which to start a new business venture.
