Last weekend was a great reminder of what's to come — weather-wise. The greater Sacramento area saw anywhere from 0.45 inches to over an inch outside of the capital city, resulting in a flood advisory.

In preparation, the California Department of Water Resources appointed Oct. 21-28 as Flood Preparedness Week.

Here's a breakdown with the need-to-knows to stay afloat in an emergency:

Assess your risk by location — enter your address to check flood hazard information in your area.
Prep now — build an emergency evacuation kit + make a plan for where to go and what to do with your pets.
Download the Weather Channel app from Google Play or the App Store + sign up for extreme weather alerts.
Consider purchasing flood insurance.
