You're familiar with calling 911 in case of emergencies, and — if you're over 30 — probably remember calling 411 to get info before there was a supercomputer in your pocket. But did you know that the City of Sacramento also has a 311 service that aims to make the lives of its residents easier?

Allow us to explain.

What is 311?

No, we're not talking about the late 90s rock band. 311 is a dedicated, non-emergency phone number community members can call within city limits. From reporting downed trees and potholes to determining what building permits are needed for home renovations, 311 has operators working 24/7 to either answer your questions or put you in touch with the correct city department. If you're outside of city limits, they can still be reached at (916) 264-5011.

I have an issue, but do not want to talk on the phone

Honestly, same. Thankfully, there is a Sac311 app available on the App Store and Google Play that can handle most requests. If web browsers are more your thing, you can also put in a service request online (there's a handy FAQ so you can see if other residents have already solved the problem for you).

Are there other numbers like 311?

In fact, there are. 211 is available for Sacramentans to call for information about local health services. Travelers can use 511 to get traffic information or find others they can carpool with. Homeowners should call 811 at least two days before digging on their property so crews can come out and mark utility lines.
